The State of Minnesota has extended the measures to slow the progress of COVID-19 in our state. Among these measures is that people are not to meet in groups of 10 or more. The Duluth Diocese has required that public celebrations of the Sacraments be postponed. We are not certain when these measures will actually end. After much prayer and discussion, we have decided to reschedule the celebration of 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion to September of this year. The exact date has not been set, but we expect to celebrate 1st Holy Communion in the last half of September. Once that date is set, we will schedule preparation sessions and practice.
It is our hope that moving the public celebration of 1st Holy Communion to September will enable families to publicly celebrate this important Sacrament together. This will provide some time for families to recover from our unusual and uncertain spring and summer. Celebrating in September will give us time to deliver the best preparation possible through group sessions and at home activities for children and parents. This will also allow the whole faith-family of Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph to pray for and celebrate with your child.
We know that celebrating these Sacraments is important to you and your child. We understand that your child and family may be disappointed with this delay. We are confident that preparing for and celebrating 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion in a less hectic and restricted time will be better for the faith of your child and your whole family.
